Loom Weaving with Yarn & Drinking Straws!

Drinking Straw Loom Weaving via Dollar Store Crafts. Get the instructions here.  My daughter will LOVE this!

Liquid Sidewalk Chalk!

Via Dollar Store Crafts:  Sidewalk chalk is one of those things I don't think I'll ever outgrow.  Back in April, secret stashbuster Cyn showed us how to make your own sidewalk chalk.  Now our cohort Beckie over at Infarrantly Creative has a different take on DIY chalk: liquid chalk in a spray bottle!  It's super fun, with the added bonus of no messy hands to clean up afterward.   Mix up a batch of colors and go get all Jackson Pollock  on your sidewalks!  [how to make spray chalk]

Project estimate:
  • Tempra paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Water, on hand
  • Cornstarch, on hand
  • Liquid dish soap, on hand
  • Squirt bottle, $1
Total: $1 and up

Summer Fun Ideas

I really like this idea from Let's Explore of making an "idea list" of things that you want to do with the family throughout the summer. I think we'll be trying something similar to keep us focused on having fun this summer!

Bird’s Nest Necklaces

This is an easy tutorial at Rhubarb Sky on how to make a Bird's Nest Necklace with beads, wire, and string basically. Looks like a craft my daughter will love. :) With spring (and Easter) coming, this is just the right time!

Homemade puffy paint

Sandy Toes and Popsicles: Homemade puffy paint.: Check out this recipe for homemade puffy paint! It looks easy enough to make: Self rising flour (made with flour, baking powder, and salt - find a recipe online), salt, food coloring, and water! I love the way these look. I think I'll save this to do on Spring Break with the kids. (It'll help to have a stockpile because I'm sure they'll all be B-O-R-E-D all the time.) :::eyeroll::: ;)

Crafty Stuff 12/27

Do I feel bad posting about Christmasy crafts after Christmas? A little, but then again, you can get things on GOOD clearance right now and prepare for next year!

Here are some lemon tea lights. The language for this blog is in Dutch, but it looks like you melt the wax of 2 tea light candles, dump it in the lemon, and then plop in another tea light candle with the wick. Voila? Pretty!

Print this picture off and cut out the images. Then let your little one decorate the Christmas tree.

Go here for a tutorial to make these adorable pinecone Christmas trees. They use needle-felted balls, but I thought pom-poms as soon as I saw them. So maybe you could use them instead? Cute!!

The fingerprint trees here are SUPER cute. I love fingerprint pictures. Evie got one of the Ed Emberley books for Christmas, and I'm hoping to see a ton of cute fingerprint pictures around the house.

These are some simple Christmas ornament drawings. Sometimes simple can be so pretty. Read about it here.

I love, love, love these poinsettas! These are made with toilet paper tubes and coffee filters along with some other basic crafts. How pretty!

And one not-so-Christmasy craft:
I think this fruit art is really cute. It's made from paper, plywood, and some paint.

Crafty Stuff 12/01

Love Rocks ~ How freaking adorable are these rocks? They have been Mod Podged with fabric scrap hearts. You can see more about them here.

She also references this blog, which has BIRD fabric scraps Mod Podged on rocks. Oh My. I have a bit of an obsession with birds.

Check out this autumn tree art that kids can make! (I'm also obsessed with orange and trees/flowers.) It's made by blowing paint through straws and dabbing paint on paper - thingd my kids would love! Check out the tutorial here!

(I could still do this even though it's winter now, right???:) )

Helping Little Hands gives a nice refresher tutorial on how to make coffee- filter snowflakes with the kids. You can get 100 filters for less than $1, so this makes cheap, pretty winter decor!

Lastly, how cute is this birdhouse? (I know...again with the birds...it's a sickness, really.) Obviously made from old children's books Mod Podged onto a birdhouse. See how it was made here. Ripping up a kid's book though... That would be hard for me!

Crafty Stuff 11/22

Tree Place Card - Martha Stewart Crafts - I love paper crafts. I wouldn't use this as a place card though. I would use my own scrapbook paper, and leave the star off of it. Use them as cute decorations around the house.

Ball-of-String Christmas Ornament - These are made with water balloons (blown up with air). So once the string is glued in place and dry, the kids can poke holes in them to pop them. :)

Fingerprint Thanksgiving Card - These are made by coloring your child's fingers with different colored markers and making a fingerprint on a tree you've drawn. The pumpkins are thumb prints. I love the idea of cards, but I never would send one out that I've made, so I would use this as a picture somewhere - maybe make the tree bigger with more leaves. CUTE!

Pretty Wallflowers - These are made from tissue paper! Talk about inexpensive decor! I would liven the color up a bit if I did this, but I love the idea!

Tinsel Wreath - Talk about simple! They make lots of different colors of tinsel, and you can buy a wreath form at the dollar store for $1.
